Wine, windmills and castles.

Wine, windmills and castles… La Mancha is the homeland of Don Quixote and the largest wine region in the whole world.

The literature nobel prize winner Octavio Paz wrote of this region: “La Mancha is a land that is very far from the montains, very far from the sea, but very close to the sky”. Almost half the production of wine in Spain takes place in La Mancha. And it is for a reason.

We will also taste the spectacular and famous manchego cheese accompanied by a good wine.

Departure from Madrid in the morning. The drive will take you through the flatlands of La Mancha planted with olive trees and vineyards.

Visit two wineries with wine tasting, and the windmills that Don Quixote fought thinking they were giants.

If we have time we will visit one of the 47 medieval castles from this region. Traditional lunch with wine and local food. Return to Madrid in the afternoon.

Some of the most interesting villages that we could visit are: Consuegra, where you will feel like stepping out of a novel, visiting the Knights of Calatrava Castle, Campo de Criptana, another town famous for its wine and its windmills.

Example of a wine tour La Mancha with Gourmet Madrid

The La Mancha municipality of Consuegra is located in the south of the province of Toledo, in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha. As we approach the highway through the vineyards, the imposing silhouette of the Castillo de la Muela begins to appear on the horizon, next to the mills of Consuegra, at the top of the hill called Cerro Calderico. Consuegra is a quiet village, located at the foot of the hill and surrounded by large extensions of cultivated fields.

The entire region of La Mancha is a dry region, where few rivers flow through the land. This made it difficult to obtain the hydraulic energy with which to move the water mills that were used at the time. Therefore, wind energy was used to move the blades of the windmills in Consuegra, which was used to grind the wheat and turn it into flour.

Wine tour Ribera Review

Ismael made our tour wonderful. I was staying in a hotel near Atocha station, which was close to the pick-up station. Ismael was a great guide, knew his wine, helped translate when needed and invited us to a local restaurant for lunch. It was one of my favorite meals during my week-long visit. One of the owners of the wine did not know English, but he knew his wine very well. I ordered him a case for help. To help the owner, Ismael gave the tour. 100 would go again and do the same route with Ismael.

I had a great time on this tour and Carlos does a great job of helping everyone feel included and makes sure everyone is having a good time. The tapas selection was varied at each location and the wine choices on the tour were excellent. Definitely a lot of food for everyone and an enjoyable experience in Madrid.

A fantastic tapas tour through a good variety of boutique venues with a rich variety of food and wine. Carlos was an excellent guide. He was friendly, knowledgeable and eager to answer as many questions as he could. I also met a very friendly group of fellow travelers on the tour. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Madrid for a short or long time. It is a very entertaining evening. It was very good value for money as well.
